Product Description
NEW! October 1, 2024: Ansul's CleanGuard+ line has now added the CA25 which brings a 2A rating to this line, completing Ansul's transition from their older FE-13 based CleanGuard series.

Ansul CleanGuard+® extinguishers are designed for the protection of commercial and industrial facilities traditionally protected by Halon 1211. Typically, these areas contain sensitive or irreplaceable equipment which could be damaged or destroyed by water, foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. Typical applications include computer centers, data/document storage areas, communications facilities, control rooms, electronics manufacturing, museums, art galleries, laboratories, and many others. These extinguishers are rated for temperatures from -40 to 120 °F (-40 to +49 °C) and include a six-year non-transferable manufacturer's limited warranty.
The FK-5-1-12 agent in these extinguishers has a low (effectively zero) ODP (ozone depletion potential), a low GWP (global warming potential) and an atmospheric lifetime rating of approximately one week, compared to a year or more for traditional agents. In addition, according to Cardiotox LOAEL and Cardiotox NOAEL Acute Toxicity rankings, exposure to FK-5-1-12 is five times lower on the toxicity rankings than Halotron-1®. That means FK-5-1-12 can be safely discharged in considerably smaller spaces than traditional agents. FK-5-1-12 is a colorless, odorless, electrically non-conductive "clean" agent which discharges as a liquid and flashes to a gas, providing an increased effective firefighting range. FK-5-1-12 will not cause thermal shock damage to delicate electronic equipment.
We get a lot of questions from folks who can't decide between the various clean agent options (which include water, carbon dioxide and Halotron I). There are advantages and disadvantages to each, of course. When we needed to pick extinguishers to protect our own computers and networking equipment, we chose CleanGuard. These have also been the extinguisher of choice for our, ahem, how do we put this, US government customers with sensitive electronics needs.
The CleanGuard+ CA14-NM model (only) has been tested to 7.0 Tesla and is certified for use in MRI rooms, NMR laboratories, and other areas that have magnetic fields. Additional non-magnetic options include the Amerex Water Mist non-magnetic models (item # 09660) and Badger 100% non-magnetic CO2 extinguisher (item # 09663).
Technical note: The 2018 edition of NFPA 99 at 16.9.1.1 states "Nonferrous-type fire extinguishers shall be provided in MRI rooms and associated spaces." At 16.9.1.3 it states "Clean agent or water-mist type fire extinguishers shall be provided in operating rooms" and in A.16.19.1.3. "Dry chemical fire extinguishers should not be provided in operating rooms. The clean agent extinguishers selected should have a Class A rating of some form." Finally, at 16.9.1.4 NFPA states "Clean agent-type fire extinguishers shall be provided in telecommunication entrance facilities and telecommunication equipment rooms.

All models come standard with a wall hanger hook except for the CA03VB which ships with a vehicle bracket. The hanger hook for the CA14NM is non-magnetic. Brackets, which provide more robust mounting in areas such as vehicle compartments, are also available and are sold separately (see hyperlinks in the table above).
The change from CleanGuard to CleanGuard+ had a number of other changes besides the improvements that came with the new agent. The cylinder size for the CA03VB and CA07 are the same as the models they replace (FE02VB and FE05S) and use the same brackets, but the cylinder for the CA13 (which replaced the FE13) is now the same size as Ansul's 10 lb ABC's (10S) which means it now fits into standard recessed extinguisher cabinets. The non-magnetic model improved from a 3.0 to 7.0 Tesla rating and has a much shorter size to accommodate tight spaces. The CleanGuard+ models are now QR coded and have UL/ULC serial numbers which simplifies maintenance and inspection. CleanGuard+ are significantly less expensive than the models they replaced which used the FE36 agent which was scheduled for production phaseout.

Technical note: Ansul officially obsoleted the last of their FE-13-based CleanGuard extinguisher models in September of 2024. These older models are no longer available, however field replacement parts will be available until at least October 2031 subject to availability of the constituent prts.
