- Ansul K-Guard Wet Chemical Class K Kitchen Extinguisher, 6 liter capacity
Product Description
Ansul's K-Guard extinguishers contain Ansulex™ liquid fire suppressant which quickly knocks down flames, forms a vapor-securing blanket, cools the grease and surrounding surfaces, and does so without producing toxic byproducts, making it the ideal extinguisher for commercial kitchens, food courts, cafeterias and more. The agent is specifically designed for use on fires that involve combustible cooking vegetable or animal fats in commercial cooking equipment. Typical appliances include: fryers; griddles and range tops; upright, natural charcoal, or chain-type broilers; electric, lava rock, mesquite or gas-radiant char-broilers; and woks.
The low pH makes this extinguishing agent compatible with common kitchen environments (stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized metal, mild steel, copper, and brass). This agent should not be used for fires involving energized electrical hazards. This extinguisher is meant as a backup to an automatic fire suppression system which should be activated to cut off power to the cooking equipment and permit the cooking media to cool below its auto-ignition temperature and attain complete extinguishment with this unit.
Technical notes: The 2018 edition of NFPA 99 states at 16.9.1.2 "Class K fire extinguishers shall be provided for hazards where there is a potential for fires involving combustible cooking media (vegetable or animal oils and fats." Further, NFPA 10 allows a maximum travel distance of 30 feet from the hazard (e.g. the cooking appliance); large kitchens may therefore require multiple Class K extinguishers. NFPA 10 also requires that if a wet chemical unit is partially discharged or undergoes hydrostatic testing, the remaining agent must be discarded and the agent replaced.
Both NFPA 10 and NFPA 96 mandate Class K extinguishers in addition to a wet chemical system. Paragraph 6.1.3.9.1 of the 2017 edition of NFPA 10 states that fryers, griddles, stove tops (and more) are examples where Class K extinguishers are needed. Paragraph 4.4.3.6 of the 2017 edition of NFPA 17A states that placards indicating that fixed systems should be activated prior to using an extinguisher should be posted near the Class K extinguisher (see item # 00441).
